Dear Manor Woods Families, 

October is off to a great start! We have a busy month ahead of us including some great events. We are thankful for our community and staff who make these events possible! With that said, we want to say a huge THANK YOU to our PTA for a fantastic Bingo night on Friday. We had a great turnout including guest staff Bingo callers. We are thankful for our staff who spent the evening with our students and families at Bingo. Our PTA does so much to support our students, staff, and families. We look forward to seeing you at some or all of our upcoming events.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission Contest

Each year the MLK Holiday Commission recognizes students, individuals, and organizations with several contest and awards. Our student contests include a Poster, Essay, and Oratory for grades Kindergarten through 12.  Contestants must generate original artwork, essays, and speeches that highlight Dr. King’s visionary track record of service to human rights and this year’s theme.  The “Living the Dream Award” celebrates individuals and organizations whose outreach efforts are in alignment with Dr. King’s message and vision.  This year’s theme submissions and award nomination is “Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.” The closing date for contest is October 18, 2023.  Click here for more information:

SAVE THE DATE for the 2023-2024 Howard County High School Food Drive Competition!

This year's competition will run from Monday, October 2, 2023 to Wednesday, November 1, 2023 with the objective of collecting non-perishable food items and baby products prior to the holiday season. The high school that raises the most amount of food will be recognized at the annual Howard County MLK Day Celebration on January 14th and receive a banner recognizing their accomplishment.

A Note From The School Nurse

Dear Manor Woods Elementary School  Community:

Each year, the Howard County Public School System partners with the Maryland Partnership for Prevention to bring flu immunizations into our schools for students.  This year, they will also be offering the latest Covid vaccine (Moderna).  The clinic at Manor Woods will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 during school hours.  If you would like your child to be vaccinated against the flu and/or Covid at this clinic, please register at this link:  https://www.marylandvax.org/appointment/en/reg/1202978606

You are not required to provide your child's insurance information.  It is perfectly fine to receive both vaccines on the same day.  If you have any concerns about the new Covid Moderna vaccine, you are advised to speak with your child's pediatrician. All in-school clinics will be closed to registration one week (Wednesday, October 18, 2023) before the clinic date to allow our health room staff time to review and prepare the consents and make sure enough vaccine is ordered.  If you have any questions, please call your school's health room at 410-313-8326.

IT'S ALMOST THAT TIME!!!!!!!!! We would love to invite and welcome our entire community to attend our Homecoming Pancake Breakfast, Parade and football game on Saturday, October 14!!!! Please see below for details. 

The parade route will begin at Centennial Lane Elementary School and continue down Centennial Lane to Centennial High School. The road will be closed to cars at 10:15 AM. All future Eagles are invited to walk in the parade with us(link to join is below).

The Young Authors Contest

The Howard County Literacy Association invites students in grades 1-5 to submit their original poems and/or short stories to the annual writing contest called The Young Authors' Contest. Please see the attached Young Authors’ Contest Guidelines for information about the rules and guidelines. All entries must have a completed YAC Cover Sheet sent as a PDF. Submissions may be emailed to natalie_miskimins@hcpss.org by December 11, 2023. Contact Mrs. Miskimins with any questions.  All Young Authors’ Contest information can be found on the HCLA website. 

Howard County Literacy Association welcomes parents as members.  Visit the HCLA Welcome Page  for information about joining. 

Howard County Local Childrens Board

In partnership with The Judy Center and the Lighthouse Center for Therapy & Play, the Howard County Local Children's Board is funding a social skills group for 3- & 4-year-olds starting Tuesday October 17th . A referral form with additional information about registration and group curriculum can be found here. 

This program will prioritize families who are uninsured, underinsured, and/or meet general income requirements to reach children who may not be able to access private pay services or services through their insurance. Groups will be held on Tuesdays at The Judy Center from 12:30-1:00 PM at the Judy Center, parents will need to stay with their children and active participation is encouraged. The HCPSS Educational Partnerships 2022-2023 Annual Report has just been released. Each school’s partners are listed, as well as system wide (at-large), curricular and program office partnerships. The report highlights the important role partners play in inspiring students to achieve.

Duck Dash

We are busy planning for our biggest fundraiser of the year! SAVE THE DATE: Friday, November 10th (Rain date: Friday, November 17th)! 

We plan to have the 99Pledges fundraising website up and running by early next week so students can start fundraising. Stay tuned for more information about registering on our fundraising website. 

In addition to student fundraising, we are also looking for sponsors who help pay for a Duck Dash t-shirt for all of our students, teachers, and staff. If you or someone you know owns a local business and would like to become a sponsor, please reach out to Allie at manorwoodsfundraising@gmail.com for more information about this year's Sponsorship Levels. More Duck Dash information to come as details are confirmed!

Community News & Events

 

Fan Expectations and Safety at HCPSS Athletics Events 

High school athletic events serve as a wonderful opportunity for students, friends, families, staff and community members to come together in support of their favorite teams. To ensure these games are able to be safely enjoyed by all in attendance, it is imperative that everyone adheres to the rules, expectations and laws in place to ensure safety. 

All children who are in 8th grade or younger must be accompanied by an adult at all HCPSS athletics contests or will be turned away from entry. Adult supervision must continue for the entirety of the athletic contest. 

Athletic contests are considered extensions of the school day, and behaviors that violate the HCPSS Student Code of Conduct or Board of Education policies are subject to the same disciplinary measures as those that occur during the school day. Any students found to engage in inappropriate, illegal or dangerous behavior, including verbal and physical abuse at games, are subject to discipline, including the forfeiture of the game itself. Non-student spectators who violate event rules may be asked to leave the premises and may be banned for the remainder of the season. Additionally, the Howard County Police Department maintains a presence at games and will ensure all applicable laws are adhered to. 

Please note that substances such as tobacco, marijuana, and alcohol are illegal to have on school grounds. Furthermore, no spectators are permitted to be under the influence of these substances upon entering school grounds. 

HCPSS schools are welcoming environments for our friends around the county and state. All spectators are expected to display good sportsmanship to the athletes, coaches, officials, members of the marching band, cheerleaders and poms, dance teams, opposing fans, and everyone in attendance. Please show respect for all those around you.  

Sensory Friendly Story Time 

Thanks to a continued partnership between OEIS, the HCPSS Family Support & Resource Center, and the Howard County Public Library System, we are pleased to announce the return of the Sensory Friendly Story Time & More series. These monthly classes provide an opportunity for families to experience stories, music, and movement in a supportive environment. Classes will rotate throughout the County at different HCPL branches each month. Space is limited and registration is required. Office of Early Intervention Services

OEIS will host a Parent Cafe on 10/24/23 for families of children birth-5. This is an opportunity for parents & caregivers to come together to share ideas to help take care of themselves, develop strong relationships with their children, and strengthen their families. Childcare and light refreshments are provided! Please share the October Parent Cafe flier with families--this event is free but registration is required. Any questions can be directed to EISFamily@hcpss.org.
